1910-fort-worth-texas-sanborn-fire-insurance-maps-and-atlas-volume-one
1910 Fort Worth, Texas Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps and Atlas, Volume One

This is a complete color facsimile of Volume One of Insurance Maps of Fort Worth, Texas, published by the Sanborn Map Company of New York in 1910. All eighty-two sheets are reproduced in full color from the original survey, together with the engraved title plate, the full index, the key map, and the paste-over correction sheets bound into the volume.

Sanborn fire insurance maps are the most detailed record that survives of an American city's built fabric. Each sheet shows individual buildings block by block, color-coded by construction — and the 1910 Fort Worth key is unusually fine-grained: fireproof construction, iron buildings, brick with brick or metal cornice, with frame cornice, with stone front, with frame side, brick veneered, brick and frame, frame, iron clad, and adobe. The sheets also record story heights, fire walls, iron doors and shutters, window openings by story, stables, chimneys, steam boilers, surveyed elevations, and which buildings carried automatic sprinklers, automatic fire alarms, or an independent electric plant.

This volume includes something most Sanborn sets do not: a separate Map of the Congested District of Fort Worth, drawn at 200 feet to an inch, showing every building footprint downtown at a glance — fireproof, brick or stone, and frame construction distinguished by color, sprinklered buildings flagged, fire department houses marked in black, story heights printed inside the buildings and street widths printed in the streets.

The key map covers the city west of the volume line, from the Trinity River south through the business district and out past Rosedale, Magnolia and Jessamine. A full street index and a "Specials" index of named firms and institutions make it possible to find any address or business by sheet number. The Specials record a milling, lumber and railroad town: the Burrus Mill and Elevator Co., Bewley's roller mills and elevator, the Anchor Roller Mills and the Dazey-Moore Grain Co.; a dozen lumber and fuel yards, among them Adams Simpson, Barnell, Jones-Hurt, South Side, Cameron and G. W. Owens; the Texas & Pacific Rolling Mill and depot, the Frisco freight depot, and the Fort Worth & Rio Grande shops; the Fort Worth Light and Power Co., the municipal electric and water plant, and the city water works; Stripling's and Monnig's department stores; the Majestic and Royal theatres; the Westbrook, Melba, Terminal, Richelieu and Germania hotels; Fort Worth University, the high school, All Saints' Hospital, the Carnegie-era Public Library, the County Court House and Jail, City Hall, and Synagogue Achavath Sholom.

The key map also carries the underwriters' report for 1910: a population of 71,000; about eighty-five miles of water pipe and 900 hydrants on a municipal system fed by artesian wells; a separate high-pressure fire system drawing from the Trinity above an eight-foot dam, with 126 Columbian hydrants at up to 225 pounds; and a fully paid fire department of eighty-five men and forty-two horses across eleven stations, with two more being built.

Reproduced from the copy in the Library of Congress.
