She taught herself to draw on lithographic stone, but died of typhoid fever in 1879, aged thirty-two, with only a few plates complete. Her mother, Mrs. N. E. Jones, took up the brush and, over seven more years and with the help of several Circleville women, finished the plates; Dr. Howard Jones, Genevieve's brother, wrote the accompanying text from nests he collected himself.
