In 1870, F.W. Beers & Co. of New York published one of the earliest atlases of the city of Worcester, compiled from actual surveys by and under the direction of F.W. Beers, assisted by Geo. P. Sanford and others. This facsimile edition reproduces the complete atlas, opening with a plan of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, a plan of Worcester County, and a township map of Worcester showing all eight wards and the surrounding villages of Tatnuck, Cherry Valley, New Worcester, Hopeville, South Worcester, Northville, and Quinsigamond, with rural property owners named on their land.

An index map of the city, gridded in red, keys into the detail plates that follow — drawn at 250 feet to the inch and recording lot numbers, water pipes, ward lines, and individual buildings with the names of their owners, from Stephen Salisbury's estate beside Salisbury's Pond to the Highland Military Academy on the hill above it. The atlas captures the Heart of the Commonwealth at the height of its industrial rise, when the wire works, iron works, and machine shops along the Blackstone corridor were drawing thousands of new residents, and the College of the Holy Cross crowned the southern approach to the city. Rounding out the volume is the Worcester Subscribers' Business References, a directory of the city's attorneys, bankers, machinists, brewers, grocers, and dozens of other trades, each entry giving the proprietor's name and street address.

With owner names, lot-level detail, and a full business directory, this atlas is an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Worcester and central Massachusetts history.
