This full-color facsimile reproduces the Atlas of the City of Cambridge, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, published by G.M. Hopkins & Co. of Philadelphia in 1873. This edition is unabridged: every plate of the original is included and reproduced in full color, along with the original title page and table of contents.
Compiled by and under the direction of G.M. Hopkins, Civil Engineer — credited on the title page as author of all the maps made for the late Geological Survey of New Jersey — and engraved by Edward Busch, the atlas opens with a hand-colored Outline & Index Map of the city at 1,200 feet to the inch, then maps Cambridge ward by ward across eighteen plates at street and lot level, with individual properties and owners' names recorded throughout. The plates span the full sweep of the city between the Charles River and the Somerville line, taking in Harvard College and the Common, Mount Auburn Cemetery, Fresh Pond, Miller's River, and the rail lines and canals of East Cambridge.
For anyone researching a specific house, street, or neighborhood in Cambridge, these plates show who owned what — lot by lot — in 1873, an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Cambridge history.
44 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
