This is a full-color facsimile of the Atlas of Centre County, Pennsylvania, from actual surveys by and under the direction of Beach Nichols, published by A. Pomeroy & Co. of Philadelphia in 1874. Every plate of the original is reproduced in color from the Library of Congress copy, together with the printed index and the county statistical tables.
The atlas opens with a map of the State of Pennsylvania and an outline map of Centre County showing its townships, post offices, roads and railroads, with a table of distances between the county's towns. A hand-colored plate follows for each township: Benner, Boggs, Burnside, Curtin, Ferguson, Gregg, Haines, Half Moon, Harris, Howard, Huston, Liberty, Marion and Walker, Miles, Patton, Penn, Potter, Rush, Snow Shoe, Spring, Taylor, Union and Worth. These township maps name the owner of each farm and property and mark the schools, churches, mills, furnaces, stores and post offices, with business notices listing the local merchants and tradesmen.
Village plans show the streets and lot owners of Bellefonte in its North, West and South Wards, Philipsburg, Milesburg, Boalsburg, Centre Hall, Millheim, Aaronsburg, Rebersburg, Madisonburg, Spring Mills, Pattonville and Pine Grove Mills, Penn Hall, Potters Mills, Stormstown, Eagleville, Jacksonville, Hublersburg, Julian Furnace, Moshannon, Unionville, Port Matilda, Woodward and Zion, along with Howard, Mount Eagle, Lemont and the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania, renamed the Pennsylvania State College in the very year this atlas was published.
For anyone tracing a Centre County family, the township plates locate ancestral farms by name and show the neighbors, roads and landmarks around them. An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Centre County and central Pennsylvania history.
