This is a full-color facsimile of Atlas of Philadelphia in Fifteen Volumes, Vol. 1, 5th, 7th & 8th Wards, compiled from official records and actual surveys under the direction of Walter S. Mac Cormac, Civil Engineer, and published by G. H. Jones & Co., Surveyors and Publishers, Philadelphia, in 1874. It is reproduced complete from the State Library of Pennsylvania copy. Note that this is one volume of a fifteen-volume set and covers only the three wards named; Volume 2, the Nineteenth Ward, is published separately.
The three wards are the old city between the Delaware and the Schuylkill from Chestnut Street south to South Street: Society Hill, Independence Square, Washington Square and Rittenhouse Square. Seventeen plates at a scale large enough to show every lot with its dimensions and the name of its owner or occupant, with the street railways, public buildings, churches and squares. The volume also includes a plate of the Delaware River wharves, a plate of Smith's and Windmill Islands, which were later dredged away entirely, and two Gas Maps showing the mains beneath the streets. It opens with Smedley's colored key map of the whole city and the index map of the three wards with its printed location of streets, avenues, alleys, courts and places.
An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Philadelphia history.
