Caldwell's Illustrated Historical Combination Atlas of Clarion County, Pennsylvania was published by J. A. Caldwell of Condit, Ohio, in 1877, from actual surveys made under the direction of Henry Cring, and was engraved, lithographed and printed in color by Otto Krebs of Pittsburgh. This edition is a complete facsimile, printed in full color, so the hand-colored maps, the color lithographs and every page of the original are reproduced as issued. Note the images reflect the current state of the scan book which has some rips and some missing portions of the maps.
Clarion County was the northern edge of the Pennsylvania oil region in 1877, and this is one of only a handful of county atlases in the state to be printed with full color lithographic plates. Beside the usual maps it carries color views of oil farms and derricks along the Clarion and Allegheny rivers, of furnace grounds and iron works, of farms, mills, hotels and stores, the county court house and the new prison at Clarion, and dozens of residences across the county.
The atlas opens with a historical sketch of the county and statistical tables, followed by a map of every township: Ashland, Beaver, Brady, Clarion, Elk, Farmington, Highland, Knox, Licking, Limestone, Madison, Millcreek, Monroe, Paint, Perry, Piney, Porter, Redbank, Richland, Salem, Toby and Washington. Town and village plans include Clarion, Strattanville, St. Petersburg, Callensburg, Edenburg, New Bethlehem, Foxburg, Rimersburg, Shippenville, Perryville, Monterey, Fairmount, Curllsville, Shannondale, Fryburg, Lickingville, Scotch Hill and many more, together with the maps of Pennsylvania and the United States, a map of the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad, and the business directory of every township.
An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Clarion County and oil region history.
