Historical Atlas of Wisconsin, compiled and published by Snyder, Van Vechten & Co. of Milwaukee in 1878 — reproduced here in full color. This edition reprints the atlas's complete map section: the title page and contents, every general map, every county map, every city and village plat, and every view and portrait plate, from the frontispiece of the State Capitol through the portrait plate facing page 123. The letterpress text that filled the second half of the original volume — the History of Wisconsin, the county histories, the biographical sketches, and the directories — is not included; this is the atlas of maps, complete and unabridged as maps.

The general maps open the volume: the hemispheres, a new railroad map of the United States, the census population and vitality maps of 1870, T. C. Chamberlin's geological map of Wisconsin, the climatological map, the agricultural production maps, the judicial, congressional, senatorial and assembly district maps, and the great double-page map of the state.

Then the counties, sixty in all, each on its own plate with towns, sections, railroads, lakes and streams: Milwaukee, Dane, Rock, Grant, Racine and Kenosha, Walworth, Waukesha, Washington and Ozaukee, Dodge, Jefferson, Green, Columbia, Sauk, Iowa, La Fayette, Crawford, Richland, Vernon, La Crosse, Trempealeau, Buffalo, Jackson, Monroe, Juneau and Adams, Wood and Portage, Waushara, Waupaca, Marquette, Green Lake, Winnebago, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Calumet, Outagamie, Brown, Kewaunee, Oconto, Door, Shawano, Marathon, Lincoln, Taylor, Clark, Chippewa, Eau Claire, Pepin, Pierce, Dunn, St. Croix, Polk, Barron, Ashland and Bayfield, Douglas and Burnett.

Interleaved with them are the city and village plats — Milwaukee, Madison, Racine, Janesville, Beloit, Oshkosh, La Crosse, Green Bay and Fort Howard, Appleton, Sheboygan, Eau Claire, Prairie du Chien, Watertown, Ripon, Hudson, Chippewa Falls and dozens more — with the engraved views and portraits: the State Capitol, the state normal schools and the University of Wisconsin, the National Soldiers' Home, Nashotah House, the governors of Wisconsin, and page after page of farms, mills, hotels and business blocks drawn from life in 1877 and 1878.

For anyone tracing a Wisconsin family, a farm, or a vanished village, these plates put the whole state on the table at once — an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Wisconsin history.

156 pages. 8.5" x 11.25". Full color. Hardcover.
