In 1878 Julius Pitzman — surveyor of the city and county of St. Louis — published his New Atlas of the City and County of Saint Louis, Missouri, constructed from actual surveys and official records, engraved by Worley & Bracher and issued by A. B. Holcombe & Co. of Philadelphia. This edition is an unabridged, full-color facsimile reproduced from the archival scans of the copy at the State Historical Society of Missouri — every map, plan, and directory page of the original.

The atlas opens with a double-page outline map of the city and county, then maps the city of St. Louis ward by ward in four large double-page sections covering Wards 1 through 28, with enlarged plans of Rock Spring, East Rock Spring, Luxemburg, McRee City, Baden, Cheltenham, and Cote Brillante. The county follows in twenty-two township plats spanning Townships 42–48 North, Ranges 3–8 East, naming the landowners of the era parcel by parcel, with village plans of Kirkwood, Ferguson, Webster, Manchester, Ballwin, Fenton, Eureka, Allenton, Sappington, Meramec, Des Peres, Centreton, and St. Ferdinand — present-day Florissant. The complete Patrons' Business Directory closes the volume. Surveyed just two years after Compton & Dry's Pictorial St. Louis, Pitzman's atlas is the property-record companion to that famous bird's-eye view, and his surveys underpin most St. Louis land research to this day.

An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of St. Louis history.
