This volume is a complete color facsimile of the Topographical and Geological Atlas of the District of the High Plateaus of Utah, prepared to accompany the report of Capt. C. E. Dutton, U.S. Ordnance Corps, Assistant Geologist, and published by the Department of the Interior, United States Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region, J. W. Powell in Charge, with lithography by Julius Bien, New York, in 1879. All eight sheets of the original atlas are reproduced in full color.
The atlas documents one of the classic districts of American geology. Topographical and geological maps of the High Plateaus district are joined by a remarkable relief map — an early example of printed relief shading — a map of portions of Utah and Arizona showing the arrangement of faults and flexures in the Kaibabs and High Plateaus, naming the Grand Wash, Hurricane, Toroweap, Sevier, Kaibab, and Paunsagunt faults, and a stereogram of the displacements of the district. Two sheets of structure sections traverse the Pavant, Tushar, Sevier, Aquarius, Markagunt, Kaiparowits, and Paunsagunt plateaus, and a map of Utah Territory completes the atlas. This copy carries the provenance of Senator Roscoe Conkling.
A landmark of the Powell Survey and of nineteenth-century American earth science, and an essential reference for geologists, historians of the American West, and collectors of Utah history.
