A complete, full-color facsimile of the Atlas of Hancock County, Maine, compiled and published under the direction of Geo. N. Colby by S. F. Colby & Co. of Ellsworth in 1881. Drawn from official plans, U.S. Coast Survey charts, and actual surveys by H. E. Halfpenny and J. H. Stuart, engraved by Wm. Bracher and printed by F. Bourquin of Philadelphia, it captures Down East Maine's coast and interior at the dawn of the Bar Harbor resort era. This edition reproduces the original in its entirety, in color.
Inside are a double-page county map; a mining map showing the Hancock County section of the mining districts of eastern Maine; a general plan of the City of Ellsworth with four detailed village plans; and town maps and village plans spanning the county — Bucksport, Orland, and Verona on the Penobscot; Castine, Penobscot, Brooksville, Sedgwick, and Brooklin; Blue Hill and Surry; Deer Isle, Isle au Haut, and Swan's Island; Trenton, Lamoine, Hancock, Sullivan, Gouldsborough, and Winter Harbor; and Mount Desert Island, with a double-page map of the island and a village plan of Bar Harbor in the town of Eden. Inland townships, plantations, and timber lands round out the coverage, along with engraved views and the subscribers' Patrons' Business Directory of county merchants, farmers, and sea captains.
An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Maine history.
