This volume is a complete color facsimile of the Geological and Geographical Atlas of Colorado and Portions of Adjacent Territory, prepared under F. V. Hayden, U.S. Geologist in Charge, and published by the Department of the Interior, United States Geological and Geographical Surveys of the Territories, Washington, in 1881, with lithography by Julius Bien. This is the corrected second edition, updated from the 1877 first edition, and all twenty sheets of the original atlas are reproduced in full color.

The atlas presents the results of the Hayden Survey's field seasons of 1873 through 1876, covering the entire State of Colorado and adjacent portions of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Four state-wide maps at twelve miles to the inch — the Triangulation Map, Drainage Map, Economic Map, and General Geological Map — are followed by twelve regional sheets at four miles to the inch: six topographical and six geological, covering Northwestern, Northern Central, Central, Western, Southwestern, and Southern Central Colorado, with contours at approximately two-hundred-foot intervals. Two sheets of colored geological sections and two sheets of panoramic views complete the atlas. The primary triangulation was carried out by J. T. Gardner and completed by A. D. Wilson; the preparation of the colored sheets was entrusted to W. H. Holmes.

A landmark of nineteenth-century American cartography and an essential reference for geologists, historians of the American West, and collectors of Colorado history.
