Published in Washington in 1882 by the United States Geological Survey under Director Clarence King, with lithography by Julius Bien & Co. of New York, this atlas accompanied George F. Becker's monograph on the geology of the Comstock Lode — the great silver lode beneath Virginia City, Nevada. This edition is a complete, unabridged facsimile with the original color lithography reproduced in full color.

The atlas opens with a Map of the Washoe District showing mining claims and a Geological Map of the Washoe District, followed by vertical cross-sections of the Comstock Lode through the Utah, Sierra Nevada, Union, C. & C., Sutro Tunnel, Forman, Combination, Yellow Jacket, Belcher, and Savage shafts, and horizontal cross-sections on the Sutro Tunnel level at 1,900 feet. Three vertical longitudinal projections plot the position of ore bodies along the entire lode, from the Utah to the Baltimore Consolidated. Nine sheets of Comstock mine maps cover the storied claims individually: Ophir, California, Consolidated Virginia, Best & Belcher, Gould & Curry, Savage, Hale & Norcross, Chollar, Potosi, Bullion, Crown Point, Yellow Jacket, Overman, and more.

Produced at the height of the Comstock era, these sheets document the underground workings of the richest silver strike in American history with the full precision of a government survey.

An essential reference for mining historians, geologists, and collectors of Nevada and Western mining history.
