In 1883 the Philadelphia map publisher and civil engineer G. M. Hopkins issued his Atlas of the City of St. Louis, Missouri, From Official Records, Private Plans and Actual Surveys — a monumental ward-by-ward property atlas of the entire city. This edition is an unabridged, full-color facsimile reproduced from the archival scans of the copy at the State Historical Society of Missouri: the double-page Plate of Index showing the city's wards, railroads, and stations, followed by all forty-four plates, complete.

Every plate maps St. Louis at the property level: owners' names lettered on their parcels, building footprints drawn in place, block and lot numbers throughout — street by street from the Mississippi riverfront across every ward of the city. For St. Louis research this is the essential building-level record of the city before Sanborn fire insurance coverage begins in the 1890s, drawn seven years after Compton & Dry's Pictorial St. Louis and five years after Pitzman's atlas of the city and county — the third pillar of the Gilded Age St. Louis map shelf. Whoever owned the ground your house stands on in 1883, this atlas names them.

An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of St. Louis history.
