In 1883, New York surveyors Elisha Robinson and Roger H. Pidgeon published one of the most detailed maps ever made of nineteenth-century New Orleans: a great folio atlas recording the city street by street and lot by lot. This edition reproduces all thirty plates of the original in full color, from digital images of the copy preserved in the New Orleans Notarial Archives. The original edition's index maps were not digitized and are not included; a publisher's guide to the plate arrangement is provided in their place.
The atlas covers all seven municipal districts of the city as it stood in 1883. Here is the Vieux Carré — the French Quarter — with Faubourg Tremé beside it; the American commercial quarter of Faubourg St. Marie, the Cotton Press District, and Lee Circle; the Lower Garden District and Garden District mansions of the Fourth District; Faubourg Marigny, Bywater, and the Fairgrounds downriver; Algiers Point across the Mississippi; and the upriver neighborhoods of Bouligny, Black Pearl, and Carrollton. Individual lots, block numbers, street names, and waterfront wharves are recorded throughout, making it possible to locate a single property as it existed nearly a century and a half ago.
Long a standard reference at the Notarial Archives for tracing New Orleans property, the Robinson atlas is an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of New Orleans and Louisiana history.
