The complete second volume of the 1884 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Detroit, Michigan, reprinted in full color.
In 1884 the Sanborn Map & Publishing Co. of New York surveyed Detroit for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch on large double-page sheets. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, street numbers, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains, steam boilers and fire walls all marked. The key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city and the Detroit River front.
Volume Two carries the survey on from sheet 38 through the east side of the city: the stores, hotels and warehouses along Randolph, Brush, Bates and Woodbridge Streets by the river, the docks, foundries, brass works and lumber yards of the river front east of Woodward, the Pullman Palace Car Works, the House of Correction, Gratiot Avenue and the German neighborhoods along it, and the residential streets out to Elmwood Cemetery and the city limits. Thirty-seven numbered sheets, each a two-page spread in this edition, record the city as it stood in the year Detroit was becoming the industrial capital of the Great Lakes.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the volume: the key map and all thirty-seven double-page map sheets (38 to 74). It is the companion to Volume One (sheets 1 to 37) and is completed by the 1889 Volume Three. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Detroit address back to the 1880s.
