Insurance Maps of Toledo, Ohio, published by the Sanborn Map & Publishing Co., Limited, of 117 Broadway, New York, in 1888 — reproduced here as a complete color facsimile, with all thirty-nine numbered sheets, the key map, and the full report and street and business indexes. Each of the large original sheets is reproduced across two pages, at a scale of fifty feet to the inch.

Sanborn's surveyors mapped a Great Lakes port of 80,000 people building itself out of grain, lumber and iron. Every structure is drawn in plan and color-coded by construction — brick, frame, iron, stone front — with the number of stories, roof material, window and door openings, iron shutters, fire walls, chimneys and steam boilers, and the name of the business inside.

The sheets run from the downtown blocks along Summit, St. Clair, Superior and Madison out through West Toledo to the State Fair Grounds and the Lucas County Infirmary, north along the Maumee to North Toledo, and across the river to East Toledo and South East Toledo. Along the water are the Wabash elevators, the lumber yards and coal docks, the Toledo Bridge Co. and the Mitchell & Rowland Lumber Co.; inland are the Milburn Wagon Co., the Gendron Iron Wheel Co., the Woolson Spice Co., Manhattan Flour Mills, the Standard Saw Works and the Eagle and Finlay breweries.

The front matter is reproduced in full — the report on the stand-pipe water works drawing sixteen million gallons a day from the Maumee, the fire department of forty-nine men with its Silsby and Clapp & Jones steam engines and 225 telegraph alarm boxes, a street-by-street index, and an index of "specials" naming hundreds of individual buildings: the Boody House and the Empire and Michigan hotels, the Odeon Hall and the People's and New Standard theatres, the United States Post Office and Custom House, the Toledo Art Academy, the Ursuline Convent, the Northwestern Ohio Medical College, St. Vincent's Hospital and the Home for Friendless Women.

For anyone tracing a specific address, a vanished neighborhood, or a Toledo business, these sheets record the city in a detail no other source preserves — an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Ohio history.
