The complete third volume of the Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Detroit, Michigan - the 1889 survey of the newly annexed districts - reprinted in full color.

In 1889 the Sanborn Map & Publishing Co. of New York extended its 1884 survey of Detroit to the territory the city had annexed since, drawing it at fifty feet to the inch on large double-page sheets. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, street numbers, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains, steam boilers and fire walls all marked. The volume opens with the surveyor's report on the water works and fire department and an index of streets and specials, and a corrected key map places the colored sheet grid of all three volumes over the whole enlarged city, from Greenfield and Hamtramck townships to the river.

Volume Three covers sheets 82 to 122: the streets north of Warren and Forest along Woodward Avenue, Cass and Second, the Grand Trunk and Michigan Central grounds, Gratiot and Grand River Avenues out to the boulevard, the Polish parishes and the greenhouses and market gardens of the outskirts, and the east side out along Jefferson Avenue to the Detroit City Water Works, the Detroit Driving Club and the Belle Isle bridge. Forty-one numbered sheets, each a two-page spread in this edition, record the districts where Detroit was growing fastest at the end of the 1880s.

This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the volume: the report and index sheet, the key map and all forty-one double-page map sheets (82 to 122). It completes the set begun with the 1884 Volumes One (sheets 1 to 37) and Two (sheets 38 to 74). Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Detroit address back to the 1880s.
