Atlas of Queens Co., Long Island, New York, compiled from official records, private plans and actual surveys by and under the direction of Chester Wolverton and published by him in 1891 — reproduced here in full color from the New York Public Library copy, complete: the title page, the table of contents, and all thirty-four plates.

This is the last full atlas of Queens County as it then existed. In 1898 the western towns went into Greater New York; in 1899 the eastern towns broke away as Nassau County. Wolverton mapped all of it while it was still one county, which makes this book two things at once: the definitive picture of old Queens, and the earliest detailed atlas of what became Nassau.

On the Queens side are Long Island City in five ward plans, Newtown, Maspeth, Woodside, Winfield and Laurel Hill, Jamaica, Flushing, College Point, Whitestone, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, Morris Park, Hollis, Corona and Middle Village. On the Nassau side are Hempstead and Rockville Centre, Freeport, Far Rockaway and Rockaway Beach with Arverne, Hammels and Seaside, Woodsburgh, Cedarhurst and Lawrence, Valley Stream, Baldwins, Seaford, Sea Cliff, Glen Cove, Roslyn, Mineola, Hicksville, Oyster Bay, Garden City and the grounds of the Meadow Brook Hunt Club.

The town plates map the countryside lot by lot with the name of every property owner lettered across the ground, and the village plans go down to individual buildings, streets and bathing pavilions. Two orientation sheets are bound in as well: a map of the City of Brooklyn and a map of the whole of Long Island.

For anyone tracing a Queens or Nassau family, a house, or a neighborhood that has changed beyond recognition, these plates record the county in a detail no other source preserves — an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of New York history.
