In 1891 the Sanborn-Perris Map Co. of New York issued Insurance Maps of Cincinnati, Ohio, Volume One — a street-by-street survey of the city's heart, drawn at 40 feet to the inch and sold to insurance underwriters for fifty dollars. This edition is an unabridged, full-color facsimile of that volume, reproduced from the copy in the Library of Congress: the ornate title and key map, the publisher's report and complete street index, and all thirty-seven double-page plates with their skeleton supplements.

Volume One covers Cincinnati's downtown core in the year the city counted 300,000 residents: the Ohio River landing and the Cincinnati & Covington Suspension Bridge, Fountain Square, the Post Office and Custom House, Central Union Station, the Miami Canal, Garfield Place, Washington Square, and Lincoln Park, reaching north through Over-the-Rhine to Findlay Market and west through the West End. Every building appears with its footprint color-coded by construction — pink for brick, yellow for frame, blue for stone — with fire walls, iron shutters, and occupancies lettered in place, from Hall's Safe & Lock Co. and the Fleischmann & Co. yeast works to the Chamber of Commerce, the Catholic Cathedral, Cincinnati Hospital, and the Queen City Club. The publisher's report records the city itself: a fire department of 298 men and 118 horses, 26 steam fire engines, 371 alarm boxes, and the reservoirs at Eden Park and Mt. Auburn.

An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Cincinnati history.
