The complete 1891 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Des Moines, Iowa, reprinted in full color.
In 1891 the Sanborn-Perris Map Company of New York surveyed the Iowa capital for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire-department stations all marked. The index sheet lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel and factory with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the coloured sheet grid over the whole city on both banks of the Des Moines River.
The forty-seven numbered sheets work block by block through the business district along Walnut, Locust and Court Avenue, the railroad yards and mills along the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, East Des Moines along East Grand and East Locust, Market Square, the university and college grounds, Highland Park, and the coal companies on the city's edge.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title and index sheet, the key map and all forty-seven numbered map sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Des Moines address back to 1891.
