In 1893 D. H. Hurd & Co. of Boston published the Town and City Atlas of the State of Connecticut, compiled from government surveys, county records and personal investigations. This facsimile reprints every map, chart, plan and view of the original in full color at the full page size of the 1893 edition.
The atlas opens with a view of the State Capitol at Hartford, the two-sheet Map of Connecticut drawn expressly for the atlas, and maps of the state showing its counties, senatorial districts, congressional districts and the population of each town, followed by four United States Coast Survey charts of Long Island Sound from New York to Rocky Point. The heart of the book is a county-by-county run through all eight counties, each with a north-part and south-part map showing every town, road, railroad, river and post office, and then a plan of every city, borough and village in the county. Hartford, New Haven, Bridgeport and New London are each mapped in several sheets by ward, with streets, lots and buildings; Waterbury, Meriden, Norwich, Danbury, New Britain, Stamford, Norwalk, Middletown, Ansonia, Derby, Rockville and Willimantic each have their own plan; and the village maps range from Greenwich, Ridgefield and Southport to Winsted, Litchfield, Stafford Springs, Putnam and Danielsonville. Interleaved throughout are D. H. Hurd's lithographic views of the state's mills, brass works, factories, churches, schools and residences, from the Travelers Insurance building and the Billings & Spencer works in Hartford to the Waterbury Watch Company, the Meriden Britannia Company and the Parker Gun Works.
The letterpress statistical section of the original, comprising the tables of banks, schools, insurance, post offices, railroads, population and town statistics and the list of leading citizens, is not reproduced; every map, chart, plan and view of the original is included.
An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Connecticut history.
