A complete, full-color facsimile of Insurance Maps of Houston, Harris Co., Texas, published by the Sanborn-Perris Map Co., Limited, of 115 Broadway, New York, in 1896. Seventy-nine map sheets at a scale of fifty feet to an inch cover the whole city in a single volume, with the original decorated title sheet and full street and specials indexes — a portrait of the bayou cotton port five years before Spindletop made it the capital of Texas oil.
Like all Sanborn fire insurance maps, every structure is drawn to scale and color-coded by construction, with building uses, business names, water mains, and hydrants marked — a lot-by-lot record of nineteenth-century Houston. The sheets take in the county court house, the Cotton Exchange Building, the Capitol Hotel and Hutchins House, the City Market House, Sweeney & Coombs' Opera House, and Baldwin's Natatorium, along with the working city the indexes enumerate: Grand Central Depot and the depots, shops, and roundhouses of five railroads; the Bayou City, Cleveland, Inman, and Standard cotton compresses; cotton oil mills and gins; the Magnolia Brewery and American Brewing Association; foundries, lumber yards, and soap works; churches, synagogues, schools, and St. Joseph's Infirmary — with coverage reaching the new streets of Houston Heights.
This edition reproduces the Library of Congress copy from its full-resolution master scans. An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Houston and Texas history.
