The first volume of the 1896 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Tacoma, Washington, reprinted complete and in full color.
In 1896 the Sanborn-Perris Map Company of New York surveyed Tacoma for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city on Commencement Bay at fifty feet to the inch in two bound volumes of double-page sheets. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The report and index sheet lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel and mill with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the coloured sheet grid over the whole city.
Volume One's forty double-page sheets work block by block through the wharves, docks and railroad yards along the water front, the business district along Pacific Avenue and the numbered streets, and the residential blocks climbing the hill behind. Volume Two, published separately, covers sheets 51 to 91.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of Volume One: the report and index sheet, the key map and all forty double-page map sheets, each laid across a two-page spread. A companion to the Seattle 1893 volumes. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Tacoma address back to 1896.
84 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
