Standard Atlas of Buffalo and Pepin Counties, Wisconsin, compiled and published by Geo. A. Ogle & Co. of Chicago in 1896 — reproduced here in full color from the Library of Congress copy. This edition reprints the atlas proper: the outline map of the two counties, every township plate, every village and city plat, the portrait department, the maps of Wisconsin, the United States and the World, and the reference directory. The publisher's supplement — the stock essays on land surveys, civil government, banking and world history that Ogle bound into every county atlas it issued — is not included.

The township plates carry the name of every landowner lettered across their acreage, with the roads, school houses, churches, mills and railroads of 1896. Buffalo County runs from the Mississippi bluffs inland: Alma, Belvidere, Buffalo, Canton, Cross, Dover, Gilmanton, Glencoe, Lincoln, Maxville, Milton, Modena, Mondovi, Montana, Naples, Nelson and Waumandee. Pepin County follows with Albany, Durand, Frankfort, Pepin, Stockholm, Waterville and Waubeek.

The village and city plats show lots and owners in Alma and Buffalo City on the river, Fountain City, Mondovi, Cochrane, Gilmanton, Fairview, Nelson, Misha Mokwa, Modena and Waumandee in Buffalo County, and Durand, Pepin, Stockholm, Arkansaw, Lakeport, Ella, Lima and North Pepin in Pepin County — small places on the Chippewa and the Mississippi, several of which never grew past the size they are drawn at here.

The portrait department reproduces the engraved likenesses of county residents, and the reference directory lists them by name with occupation, post office, section and year of settlement — the year of settlement being the line that most often breaks a stalled search.

Because a plat book records who owned which forty acres, it answers a question no census can. For anyone tracing a Buffalo or Pepin County family, this is an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Wisconsin history.
