This is a complete color facsimile of Insurance Maps of Canton, Ohio, published by the Sanborn-Perris Map Co., Limited, of New York, and copyrighted in 1897. Every plate is reproduced in full color from the original survey, including the paste-over correction sheets bound into the volume.
Drawn at fifty feet to an inch, Sanborn fire insurance maps are the most detailed record that survives of an American city's built fabric. Each of the 65 numbered sheets shows individual buildings block by block, color-coded by construction. The volume's own key distinguishes fireproof and iron buildings, brick with metal cornice, frame sides and stone fronts, iron-clad and frame construction, mansard roofs and story heights, fire walls, division-wall doors, iron shutters, window openings by story, stables, chimneys, steam boilers, hydrants, and fire-alarm boxes — all keyed to street numbers.
The key plan divides the city into sixty-five blocks radiating from the Public Square, out along Market, Tuscarawas, McKinley, Cleveland and Dueber Avenues, across both branches of the Nimishillen Creek, and past the corporation line to Lake Park.
A full street index and a separate "Specials" index of named firms and institutions make it possible to find any address or business by sheet number. The Specials list records a manufacturing city at its height: the Dueber Watch Case M'f'g Co. and the Hampden Watch Co., Diebold Safe & Lock Co., the Aultman Company and Aultman Memorial Hospital, Bucher & Gibbs Plow Co., W. H. Hoover's horse collar manufactory, Eagle Crucible Steel Co., and the Canton bridge, buggy, boiler, brewing, cutlery, fertilizer, malleable iron, pump, rolling mill, saw, steel and stoneware works — alongside flour mills, brickyards, planing mills, packing houses, hotels, churches, schools, the County Court House and Jail, the Grand Opera House, and the Stark County Agricultural Fair Grounds.
The key plan also carries the underwriters' report for 1897: a population of 41,000, fifty miles of water pipe with 73 double and 237 single hydrants on the Holly system, fed from thirty-six driven wells and the West Branch of the Nimishillen, and a fire department of 29 paid men and 40 volunteers with two steam engines and 56 Gamewell alarm boxes.
Reproduced from the copy in the Library of Congress. An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Canton and Ohio history.
