Atlas of Surveys of the City of Scranton and Borough of Dunmore, Pennsylvania was compiled from actual surveys and city records and published by Graves & Steinbarger of Boston and Philadelphia in 1898. This edition is a complete facsimile, printed in full color, so the hand-colored plates and every page of the original are reproduced as issued.
Scranton in 1898 was the anthracite capital, a city of a hundred thousand people that had barely existed fifty years before. This atlas maps it at the peak. After the outline and index map come twenty-nine double-page plates covering every ward of the city and the borough of Dunmore, drawn at a scale large enough to show each building in its own footprint, colored by construction so that brick, frame and stone can be told apart, with lot lines and dimensions, owners' names, street and alley names and house numbers.
The plates take in the whole of Scranton and Dunmore as they stood: the courthouse square and the business blocks on Lackawanna, Spruce and Wyoming Avenues, the Lackawanna River and its bridges, the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western yards and shops, the collieries and coal company workings that run beneath the streets, Nay Aug Park and the residential wards climbing the valley sides. A Directory of Patrons closes the volume.
An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, preservationists, and collectors of Scranton and Lackawanna County history.
