First published by Geo. W. Stadly & Co. of Boston in 1898, this atlas mapped four adjoining Middlesex County towns — Watertown, Belmont, Arlington, and Lexington — from official plans and actual surveys. This edition is a complete, unabridged facsimile reproduced in full color from an original copy in the Boston Public Library.
Across thirty-four large-scale plates, the atlas records these towns street by street and lot by lot at the close of the nineteenth century. Individual parcels carry the names of their owners and their lot sizes, and a color key distinguishes stone, brick, and frame buildings, stables, and greenhouses, along with water pipes, hydrants, and sewer lines. Index maps locate every plate within each town, and a full street index covers all four communities. The plates preserve a detailed picture of the era's landscape: the Watertown Arsenal, Mount Auburn Cemetery, the Boston Union Stock Market, the Fitchburg Railroad and Boston Elevated Railway lines, and the Charles River parkland then taking shape under the Metropolitan Park Commission.
Because each plate names property owners at the level of the individual house lot, this atlas allows researchers to identify who owned a specific parcel in 1898, trace a property's early history, and see a neighborhood as it stood before the twentieth century — an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Watertown, Belmont, Arlington, and Lexington history.
