The complete 1898 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Norfolk, Virginia, reprinted in full color.

In 1898 the Sanborn-Perris Map Company of New York surveyed Norfolk for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the port city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index sheet lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel and factory with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the coloured sheet grid over the whole city on the Elizabeth River, with Berkley and Portsmouth across the water.

The eighty-seven numbered sheets work block by block through the wharves and warehouses of the water front, the business district along Main, Granby and Church streets, the railroad yards, the residential streets out to Brambleton, and the piers and trestle tracks at Pinner's Point; eight skeleton sheets record the block outlines of the densest wards.

This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title page, the index sheet, the key map, all eighty-seven numbered map sheets and the eight skeleton sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Norfolk address back to 1898.

100 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
