A complete, full-color facsimile of Insurance Maps of Dallas, Texas, published by the Sanborn-Perris Map Co., Limited, of 115 Broadway, New York, in 1899. Ninety map sheets at a scale of fifty feet to an inch cover the whole city in a single volume, with the original decorated title sheet, key map, and full street and specials indexes. The key sheet records a city of 60,000 people, its waterworks, standpipes, and hydrants, and a paid fire department of one chief, four men, and thirty-two horses.

Like all Sanborn fire insurance maps, every structure is drawn to scale and color-coded by construction, with building uses, business names, water mains, and hydrants marked — a lot-by-lot record of Dallas at the close of the nineteenth century. The sheets follow Elm, Main, and Commerce through the business district and out to Oak Cliff across the Trinity River and the State Fair grounds, taking in the county court house, the U.S. Government Building, the Grand Windsor and Oriental hotels, the Opera House, and the working city the indexes enumerate: cotton compresses and cotton oil mills, planing mills and iron works, breweries and ice plants, the Morning News and Times Herald printing houses, railroad freight depots, schools, churches, and synagogues — more than two hundred indexed streets and special buildings in all.

This edition reproduces the Library of Congress copy from its full-resolution master scans. An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Dallas and Texas history.
