The first volume of the 1899 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Paterson, New Jersey, reprinted complete and in full color.

In 1899 the Sanborn-Perris Map Company of New York surveyed Paterson, the Silk City, for the fire-insurance trade, drawing it at fifty feet to the inch in two bound volumes. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index sheet lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel and mill with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the coloured sheet grid of both volumes over the whole city on the Passaic River.

Volume One's sixty-eight numbered sheets work block by block through the business district along Main Street, Broadway and Market Street, the silk mills along the Passaic River and the raceways, the railroad yards, and the residential streets beyond. Volume Two, published separately, completes the survey.

This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of Volume One: the title and index sheet, the key map and all sixty-eight numbered map sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Paterson address back to 1899.

72 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
