A complete, full-color facsimile of Insurance Maps of Austin, Texas, published by the Sanborn-Perris Map Co., Limited, of 11 Broadway, New York, in 1900, and deposited at the Library of Congress that June. Fifty-four map sheets at a scale of fifty feet to an inch cover the Texas capital building by building, with the original decorated title sheet and full street and specials indexes.
Like all Sanborn fire insurance maps, every structure is drawn to scale and color-coded by construction, with building uses, business names, water mains, and hydrants marked — a lot-by-lot record of Austin at the turn of the century. The sheets take in Congress Avenue and the State Capitol, the University, the Driskill Hotel, and neighborhoods from Hyde Park to South Austin, along with the working city the indexes enumerate: the dam and suburban railroad car barns, cotton yards, gins and oil mills, foundries, ice works, the Lone Star and Lemp's beer depots, Tillotson College, churches, schools, and hospitals — more than two hundred indexed streets and special buildings in all.
56 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
