The complete 1901 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Chattanooga, Tennessee, reprinted in full color.
In 1901 the Sanborn-Perris Map Company of New York surveyed Chattanooga for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city in the bend of the Tennessee River at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index sheet lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, foundry and mill with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
The ninety numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks and hotels along Market and Broad Streets and the wholesale district near the river, through the passenger and freight depots and yards of the railroads, the iron furnaces, foundries, rolling mills and lumber yards along the river and Chattanooga Creek, to the residential streets of Fort Wood, Highland Park and the neighborhoods out toward Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain. Two skeleton sheets record the block outlines of the densest blocks.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title page, the index sheet, the key map, all ninety numbered map sheets and the two skeleton sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Chattanooga address back to 1901.
