The complete 1903 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Knoxville, Tennessee, reprinted in full color.
In 1903 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Knoxville for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city of 48,000 on the Tennessee River at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index sheet lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and factory with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city, with notes on the water works and the fire department.
The numbered sheets work block by block from the wholesale houses, banks and stores along Gay Street and the business district between the river and the Southern Railway yards, through the mills, foundries and marble works along the river and First and Second Creeks, the University of Tennessee on the hill, Knoxville College and the residential streets of North, East and West Knoxville. Four skeleton sheets record the block outlines of the densest blocks.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas as it survives: the title page, the index sheet, the key map, the seventy numbered map sheets present in the source copy (sheet 26 is wanting) and the four skeleton sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Knoxville address back to 1903.
