This edition is a complete, full-color facsimile of Insurance Maps of Akron, Ohio, published by the Sanborn Map Company of New York in 1904. The entire atlas is reproduced in color: all 115 numbered street maps surveyed at 50 feet to an inch, the city-wide key map with its township map of Summit County, and the full street and building index. Beyond Akron itself, the atlas includes sheets for the surrounding Summit County towns of Barberton, Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Twinsburg, Tallmadge, Clinton, Manchester, Macedonia, Peninsula, and Mogadore.
Akron in 1904 was a city of 50,000 on the rise of its rubber-boom years, and the Sanborn surveyors recorded it building by building — footprint, construction (pink for brick, yellow for frame), story height, and street address — from the downtown blocks along Main, Market, and Howard Streets to the mills and factories strung along the old canal, whose hydraulic race the key map notes still ran beneath Main Street. The index locates hundreds of named landmarks of working Akron: the American Cereal Company's mills and elevators, rubber works, potteries, sewer-pipe and brick works, breweries, foundries, hotels, schools, and churches, along with the industries of Barberton and the mills of Cuyahoga Falls. The key map records the city's vitals too — its waterworks drawing on 25 wells and Summit Lake, and its fire department of 66 men, 35 horses, and 7 stations.
For anyone researching an Akron property, the Sanborn atlas is the definitive record of what stood on a lot a century ago. An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Akron and Ohio history.
