This is a complete color facsimile of Insurance Maps of Sandusky, Ohio, published by the Sanborn Map Company of New York in 1905. All seventy-one sheets are reproduced in full color from the original survey, together with the engraved title plate, the index, and the key map.

What makes this volume unusual is its reach. Beside the city key the sheet carries a second, smaller map headed "Sandusky and Lake Erie Islands," and the survey follows it out into the lake. Beyond Sandusky itself the sheets cover Cedar Point, Johnson's Island, Kelly's Island, Put-in-Bay Island, Middle Bass and North Bass Islands, and the mainland villages of Castalia and Venice.

A full street index and a separate "Specials" index of named firms and institutions make it possible to find any address or business by sheet number — and what they record, above everything else, is wine. More than twenty wineries and wine cellars appear by name: the American, Diamond, Lake Erie, Union, Monarch, Sweet Valley and Kelly Island wine companies, Engels & Krudwig, J. G. Dorn's wine factory, A. Schmidt Jr. & Bro., Duroy & Haines, the Sandusky Wine and Brandy Co., and the cellars of W. F. Becker, C. Ernst's Sons, E. Moos, Schaedler & Rhein, C. Seeholzer, C. Stokes, A. Textor, H. D. Rehburg and Wigand — with the Golden Eagle Wine Co. buildings on Middle Bass and the North Bass Island Wine Co. beyond them.

Around the wine trade stands the rest of a Lake Erie port: the Cedar Point Pleasure Resort Co. and the Breakers Hotel, the Johnson's Island Pleasure Resort Co., Hotel Victory at Put-in-Bay, the Middle Bass and Kenny's club houses, the Kelly Island Lime and Transport Co., the Sandusky and Castalia Portland cement works, the American and Ohio crayon companies, the Booth, Lay Bros., Post and Schacht fish houses, five ice companies cutting on the bay, the Davis Boat Works, the Hinde & Bennett automobile factory, the Cleveland-Sandusky brewery's Kuebler and Stang plants, cooperages, the Carnegie Library, the County Court House and Jail, Providence Hospital, the Nielson Opera House, and the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Home.

The key map also carries the underwriters' report for 1905: a population of 23,000; municipal water works drawing from Sandusky Bay through a 25-by-180-foot standpipe, with just over forty-nine miles of pipe and 272 post hydrants; and a fire department of one chief and twenty-three fully paid men, ten trained minute men, fourteen horses and four engine houses, with a fifth to be built in 1906. The surveyors noted that the works had run since 1877 without a single case of corrosion, incrustation or electrolysis.

Drawn at fifty feet to an inch, Sanborn fire insurance maps are the most detailed record that survives of an American city's built fabric. Each sheet shows individual buildings block by block, color-coded by construction — fireproof, iron, brick with metal cornice, frame or stone front, brick specials, frame and iron-clad — with story heights, fire walls, division-wall iron doors, iron shutters, window openings by story, stables, chimneys, steam boilers, hydrants and surveyed elevations, and flags for automatic sprinklers, automatic fire alarms and independent electric plants.

Reproduced from the copy in the Library of Congress. An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Sandusky, Lake Erie and Ohio history.
