The complete first volume of the 1906 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Camden, New Jersey, reprinted in full color.
In 1906 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Camden for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city on the Delaware at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index sheet lists every street and every named business, church, school, mill and factory with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
The seventy-three numbered sheets of Volume One work block by block from the ferry terminals, shipyards and lumber yards along the river front, through the stores and banks along Federal Street, Broadway and Market Street, the passenger and freight yards of the Pennsylvania and the West Jersey railroads, the mills, foundries, pen works and factories along the tracks, to the row-house streets of the older wards between Cooper's Creek and the river. Ten skeleton sheets record the block outlines of the densest blocks.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of Volume One: the title page, the index sheet, the key map, all seventy-three numbered map sheets and the ten skeleton sheets. Volume Two is published separately. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Camden address back to 1906.
