The complete 1906 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of San Diego, California, including Coronado Beach, reprinted in full color.
In 1906 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed San Diego for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the bay city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. Two index sheets list every street, every named business, church, school, hotel and factory and every block number with the sheet it appears on, and two key maps place the coloured sheet grid over the city, its harbour and Coronado.
The one hundred and eleven numbered sheets work block by block through the wharves and warehouses of the water front, the business district along Fifth Street and D Street, the railroad yards, the residential streets to the north and east, and Coronado Beach across the bay - a city of some thirty thousand people a decade before the Panama-California Exposition and the Navy transformed it.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title page, the two index sheets, the two key maps and all one hundred and eleven numbered map sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a San Diego address back to 1906.
