Facsimile of the 1908 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Provo, Utah, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole Utah County seat of 7,500 people on the Provo River, from the stores, hotels and Opera House of Center Street and Academy Avenue, the Tabernacle and the Court House, through the woolen mills, lumber yards, foundry and candy works and the Denver and Rio Grande and Salt Lake depots, to Brigham Young Academy, the ward meeting houses and schools and the State Mental Hospital.
The twenty-nine numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and offices along Center Street, Academy Avenue and First West and First North Streets - the Utah County Court House, the City Hall and fire station, the Carnegie Library, the Opera House, the Southworth Building, the Z. C. M. I. general merchandise store, the R. M. Bell telephone office, the Hotel Roberts and the Public Dance Hall - through the Denver and Rio Grande depot, the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake depot, the Provo Woolen Mills Company, the Provo Foundry and Machine Works, the Provo Pottery, Soda Water Company and Steam Laundry, the Startup Candy Company, the Excelsior Roller Mills, the Utah County Canning Company, the sugar company's syrup pumping plant, the Smoot, Beebe and Central lumber companies and the Utah Timber Company, E. J. Ward and Sons' planing mill, John S. Cowcroft and Sons, C. F. Decker and Company and W. M. Roylance's wholesale produce house, and the Continental Oil Company, to Brigham Young Academy, Proctor Academy, the Central Public School and the Franklin, Maeser and Timpanogos schools, the Utah State Mental Hospital and the Utah County Infirmary, the L. D. S. Provo Tabernacle, the Relief Society hall and the meeting houses and assembly rooms of the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth wards, the Baptist, Congregational, Episcopal, Methodist, Seventh Day Adventist and Swedish Lutheran churches, and the residential blocks of the city out to the Provo River.
In 1908 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Provo for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all thirty numbered map sheets, 1 to 30, sheet 1 being the combined key map, title and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire department, the others covering the city from the business blocks of Center Street and Academy Avenue to the woolen mills, lumber yards and railroad depots, Brigham Young Academy and the State Mental Hospital. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Provo address back to 1908.
