Facsimile of the 1909 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Greenfield, Massachusetts, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the Franklin County seat of 12,000 people on the Green River, from the Court House, Town Hall and the stores, banks and hotels of Main Street, Bank Row and Court Square out along the Boston and Maine Railroad to the tap and die, machine and baby-carriage works, the mills on the Green River, the schools, churches and residential streets up to Highland Avenue.

The twenty-eight numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and offices along Main Street, Bank Row, Federal Street, Chapman Street and Court Square - the County Court House, the Town Hall, the Post Office, the Public Library, Washington Hall, the G. A. R. Building, the old and new Armories, the First National Bank Building, the Soldiers' Monument, the Bijou Theatre, the Gazette and Courier and Recorder printing offices, the N. E. T. & T. central office, the King's, Mansion, Franklin, Greenfield, Devens, Elm, Parker, Warner, Germania, Weldon, Union and Central hotels and houses and the Fire Department - through the Boston & Maine passenger and freight depots and round house, the Connecticut Valley Street Railroad car barn, the Wells Bros. machine shops, the A. J. Smart tap and die factory, the American Tap and Die Company, the Goodell-Pratt machinists' tool and machine works, the Wiley & Russell screw-machine works, the Massachusetts Tool Company, the Greenfield Machine Company, the Reece, Wing and Bickford & Washburn machine shops, the Butler Chuck Company, the Stratton Level Company, the Warner and C. R. Field baby-carriage factories, the Rogers, Lunt & Bowlen silverware works, the Rugg wooden-rake factory, the Peerless underwear mill, the Weissbrod pocket-book factory, the Glass paper-box factory, the Diamond Electric Soap Works, the Green River Grain Company's mills, the Potter grain warehouse, the Swift beef warehouse, the Greenfield Tallow, Baking and Automobile companies, the Franklin County and Haskins lumber and planing mills, the Greenfield Electric Light and Power Company's station and the gas works, to the old and new Franklin County Hospitals, the County Jail, the High School, the Pleasant Street, Pierce Street, Conway Street, Chapman Street, Franklin Street and Washington Street schools, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, St. James' Episcopal, the First and Second Congregational, Methodist Episcopal, Baptist, Unitarian and Lutheran churches and the German Chapel on Hope Street, the Green River Cemetery, and the residential streets out to Highland Avenue.

In 1909 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Greenfield for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.

This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all twenty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 29, sheet 1 being the combined title, key map and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire department, the others covering the town from Main Street, Bank Row and Court Square out to the Boston and Maine depots and yards, the tap, die and machine works, the Green River mills and the residential streets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Greenfield address back to 1909.
