In 1910, the Walker Lithograph & Publishing Co. of Boston issued a comprehensive atlas of Barnstable County, compiled from official plans and actual surveys and covering all fifteen towns of Cape Cod: Bourne, Mashpee, Falmouth, Sandwich, Barnstable, Yarmouth, Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown. This facsimile edition reproduces the complete atlas, including the county map, index of towns and villages, town index maps, and detailed plates numbered through 49.
The detail plates are remarkable for their scale — as fine as one inch to 200 feet — recording individual buildings distinguished as brick, frame, or stable, along with hydrants, electric street railways, and the names of property owners on their land. Village plans capture Buzzards Bay, Sagamore, Bournedale, Pocasset, Woods Hole, Hyannis, Osterville, Cotuit, and dozens more, while the Sagamore Beach plates document a numbered-lot resort subdivision complete with its proposed hotel, formal garden, and plank walk along the Strand. The atlas also preserves a striking moment in Cape Cod history: the Cape Cod Canal under construction, with the Canal Company's lands, waterway center line, and the sprawling shops of the Keith Car & Manufacturing Company at Sagamore all laid out in detail.
With owner names and building-level coverage of every town on the Cape, this atlas is an essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Cape Cod and Massachusetts history.
