The complete 1911 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Charlotte, North Carolina, reprinted in full color.
In 1911 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Charlotte for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city of 35,000 at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index sheet lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and factory with the sheet it appears on; a map of the congested district shows the blocks around Independence Square at two hundred feet to the inch; and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city, with notes on the water works and the fire department.
The ninety-three numbered sheets work block by block from the business district along Trade, Tryon and College streets through the cotton mills and the railroad yards of the Southern and the Seaboard Air Line to the residential streets of Dilworth, Elizabeth Heights, Belmont Springs, Villa Heights, Wesley Heights and North Charlotte, with Latta Park, Independence Park, Elmwood Cemetery and Biddle University; ten skeleton sheets record the block outlines of the densest wards.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title page, the index sheet, the map of the congested district, the key map, all ninety-three numbered map sheets and the ten skeleton sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Charlotte address back to 1911.
