Facsimile of the 1912 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Columbus, Indiana, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole Bartholomew County seat of 10,500 people on the White River, from the stores, hotels and Court House along Washington and Third Streets and the Big Four and Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis depots, through the engine, iron, furniture, leather and canning works, to the residential additions north to Seventeenth Street and East Columbus across Haw Creek.

The twenty-eight numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and offices along Washington Street, Third, Fourth and Fifth Streets, Jackson Street and Franklin Street - the Bartholomew County Court House and Jail, the City Hall, the Public Library, the Post Office, the Crystal and Crump's theatres, the B. P. O. E. Building and the Belvedere, St. Denis, Commercial, Western and Orinoco hotels - through the Big Four and C. C. C. & St. L. depots, the P. C. C. & St. L. passenger and freight depots, the Indianapolis, Columbus and Southern Traction Company's car barn, the Reeves & Company engine and farm-implement works and warehouse, the Reeves Pulley Company, the Caldwell & Drake iron works, the Caldwell Manufacturing Company, the Columbus Machine Works, the Orinoco Furniture Company, the Columbus Handle and Tool Company, the Haw Creek Leather Company and Mooney & Sons' tannery, the Columbus Canning Company, the Columbus Milling Company, the Park Roller Mills, the Hege and Dunlap planing mills, the Fehring Carriage Company and the Jackson Buggy Works, the Kearns & Burchet hoop factory, Crump's brick yard, Wolf's City Abattoir, the Columbus Gas Light Company, the Central Indiana Light Company and the City Water Works, to the Columbus Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Dr. Henry's Sanitarium, the Francis Comfort Thomas Home, the North Side and Maple Grove schools and the Ninth Street, Pearl Street, Second Street and Sycamore Street public schools, St. Bartholomew's Roman Catholic Church and School, St. Peter's German Lutheran Church and School, the Central Christian Church and School, the First Baptist, First Methodist Episcopal, First Presbyterian, Episcopal and English Lutheran churches, St. Luke's A. M. E. Chapel, Crump's Driving Park and Barnaby's greenhouse, and the residential streets of the Original Town, Walnut Grove and the Maple Grove additions - and, across Haw Creek, East Columbus with its Christian and Methodist churches and public school.

In 1912 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Columbus for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.

This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all twenty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 29, sheet 1 being the combined title, key map and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire department, the others covering the city from the business blocks of Washington Street and the Court House to the engine works, mills and railroad yards, the White River and Haw Creek, and East Columbus. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Columbus address back to 1912.
