Facsimile of the 1924 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Bessemer, Alabama, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers Bessemer and its neighbours Brighton and Lipscomb, a combined population of 31,000: the business blocks of Second, Third and Fourth Avenues around the Court House, the railroad depots and the cast-iron pipe foundries, the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railway Company tenements beside its steel furnaces, the Jonesboro district, and the separate towns of Brighton and Lipscomb to the north-east.
The thirty-seven map sheets after the key map work block by block from the stores, banks, garages and halls along Second, Third and Fourth Avenues and Nineteenth and Twentieth Streets - the Jefferson County Court House and Jail, the City Hall and fire headquarters, the Masonic Temple, the Carnegie Library, the Post Office, the Realty and Telephone Exchange buildings, and the Grand and Terminal hotels - through the Louisville & Nashville passenger station and freight house, the Birmingham Mineral, Alabama Great Southern, St. Louis & San Francisco and Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic depots, the Long-Lewis Hardware Company, Armour & Company's meat warehouse, the United States Cast Iron Pipe and Foundry Company, the Central Foundry Company's pipe and stove works, the Cox Foundry, the Alabama Pipe Company's Superior plant, the Imperial Pipe Company, the Bessemer Soil Pipe Company, the Bessemer Foundry and Machine Shop Company, the Nashville Bridge Company's steel-bridge works, the Bessemer Galvanizing Works, F. S. Royster Guano Company's Bessemer Fertilizer Works, the Bessemer Gas and Bessemer Ice and Coal companies, the Crotwell Bros., Bessemer and Central lumber mills, the Standard Oil and Texas Oil tanks, and the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railway Company's tenements, commissary hospital and community house, to the Elizabeth Duncan Hospital, the High School and its annexes, the Clarendon, Vance, Roberts, Jonesboro, Brighton and Lipscomb schools, St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church and School, Trinity Episcopal, First Baptist, First Methodist, Presbyterian and Christian churches, the synagogue on West Seventeenth Street, the colored churches and schools, the Brighton country club, and the residential streets of Bessemer, Jonesboro, Brighton and Lipscomb.
In 1924 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Bessemer, Brighton and Lipscomb for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the business district and the foundries beside it at fifty feet to the inch and the residential districts, the pipe works, Jonesboro, Brighton and Lipscomb at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the combined title and index sheet and all thirty-eight numbered map sheets, 1 to 38, sheet 1 being the key map with the fire and water report. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Bessemer address back to 1924.
