Facsimile of the 1924 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Highland Park and Highwood, Illinois, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the Lake County city of 10,000 people on the North Shore of Lake Michigan and Highwood beside it, from the stores, banks, theatre and lodges of St. Johns Avenue, Central Avenue and Sheridan Road out along the Chicago and North Western and the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee railroads to the lumber yards and laundries, the schools, churches and residential streets of the ravines and the lake front, Exmoor and Ravinia Park, and Highwood with its village hall and the railroad shops.

The twenty-eight numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and offices along St. Johns Avenue, Central Avenue, Sheridan Road, Green Bay Road and Laurel Avenue - the City Hall, Jail and Fire Department, the Post Office, the Water Works, the Masonic Temple, the Odd Fellows Temple, the B. P. O. E. Club, the Pearl Theatre, the Highland Park Woman's Club, the Illinois Bell Telephone exchange and the Moraine Hotel - through the Chicago and North Western freight and passenger depots, the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee passenger depot, office, shops and sub-station, the Highland Park Building Material and Fuel Company, the Hines, Gourley and Borchardt lumber and building-material yards, the Oak Terrace sash and door works, the Purity Ice and Refrigerating plant, the Bowman Dairy, the Reliable, Oak Terrace and Ermine laundries and cleaners, the Special Chemical works, the Pahr greenhouse, the Public Service Company and the Sinclair and Pennsylvania oil stations, to the Highland Park Hospital, the Home for Aged and Disabled Railroad Employees, the Sisters of Loretto Convent, the Deerfield Shields Township High School, the Elm Place, Lincoln and Oak Terrace public schools, the Highland Park Club, the Exmoor Country Club and the Bob-O-Link Golf Club, Ravinia Park with its pavilion, theatre and dance pavilion, the Highland Park Presbyterian, Trinity Episcopal, Immaculate Conception and St. James' Catholic, Grace Methodist, Christian Science, Evangelical and Lutheran churches, and the residential streets of the ravines and the lake front, Port Clinton, Exmoor and Highwood, with the Highwood Village Hall, jail, fire house, post office and depot.

In December 1924 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Highland Park and Highwood for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the business districts at fifty feet to the inch and the residential streets and ravines at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.

This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all twenty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 29, sheet 1 being the combined title, key map and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire departments of Highland Park and Highwood, the others covering the city from the business district on St. Johns Avenue to the ravines and lake-front streets, Exmoor, Ravinia Park, and Highwood with the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee shops. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Highland Park address back to 1924.
