Facsimile of the 1924 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of New Castle, Indiana, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole Henry County seat of 17,000 people on the Blue River, from the Court House square and the stores, hotels and theatre of Broad and Main Streets, out along the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis, Nickel Plate and Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis railroads to the Maxwell automobile plant, the Hoosier kitchen-cabinet works, the casket, spring and foundry works and the Indiana Rolling Mill, to the residential additions of the east and south sides and the Henry County Fair Grounds.
The twenty-eight numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and offices round the Court House square and along Broad Street, Main Street, Race Street and Fleming Street - the Henry County Court House and Jail, the Historical Society Building, the Town Hall, the Post Office, the Public Library, the Coliseum, the Interurban Station, the Masonic Temple, the Y. M. C. A., the Maxim Building, the Grand Theatre, the New Bundy Hotel and the Baxton House - through the C. C. C. & St. L., Nickel Plate and P. C. C. & St. L. depots, the General Motors Company's Maxwell-New Castle plant and the Maxwell-New Castle auto-parts works, the Hoosier Manufacturing Company's kitchen-cabinet factory, the Indiana Rolling Mill Company's steel plant, the Trainor National Spring Company, Rubtex Products, the Pan American Bridge Company, the Chard Lathe Company, the New Castle Castings foundry, the New Castle and Lawson casket factories, the French piano factory, the handle and garment factories, Jennings' furniture factory, the lumber yards, the flour mill and creamery, the Nicholson beef house, the city water works and electric light plant and the greenhouses, to the New Castle Clinic Hospital and the Miller Hospital, the Senior and Junior High Schools, the Central, East, Holland and South Park schools, St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, St. James' Episcopal Church, the First Baptist, First Christian, Friends, First Methodist Episcopal, Presbyterian, Centenary Methodist and Bethel A. M. E. churches, the Henry County Fair Grounds and race track, and the residential streets of the Original Town, the Industrial, Grand Avenue, South Park, Maplewood, Walnut Park and Bundy additions.
In October 1924 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed New Castle for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch and the outlying east side, south-east side and Fair Grounds at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
This edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all twenty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 29, sheet 1 being the combined title, key map and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire department, the others covering the city from the Court House square to the automobile, steel, casket and cabinet works on the railroads, the Indiana Rolling Mill on the Blue River, and the east side, south side and Henry County Fair Grounds. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a New Castle address back to 1924.
